South East Asia - non-coomer edition

Any anons traveled to South East Asia for non coomer related activities?
Basically want to book 1-3 month stay somewhere warm for summer and near sea side. Work remotely so want easy access to sea, lots of water activities and nature. Great expat community would be great too (no backpackers).
Share you experience and suggestions, anons.

I’ve found Malaysia to have the least moronic travelers in SE Asia. Probably due to being majority Muslim, which keeps out the people who want to get drunk and party everywhere, and cooming is very much kept on the DL so weird guys tend to avoid it. Basically everyone speaks English and the few Western foreigners I saw seemed to be upper middle class.

Plus plenty of beautiful beaches and loads of places to do hiking or explore some jungles. Much cleaner than Thailand and without the scammy BS as well.

When did you go and what cities you stayed at? Any particular interesting things you would suggest that you personally enjoyed? I am going with wife, also. How safe did you find the country? Thanks for the suggestion on the Malaysia, anon.

Kuala Lumpur is a clean, modern city. Has everything you’d expect or need.

I also visited Tioman, which had some absolutely gorgeous beaches.

Kuching has easy access to nature and felt strangely American to me. Big roads, car-dependent, big homes.

But no matter where you go in Malaysia, it’s safe and clean. Not once did anyone try to scam me nor did I see anyone trying to scam anyone else. It’s Asia so murder and robbery isn’t a concern either. Tap water seems drinkable as well. I was concerned and used bottled water for the first half of my trip, but eventually gave up and was fine. Malaysia basically has first world amenities and infrastructure but at third world prices.

The only downside is it’s insanely hot every single day. That’s true for most of SE Asia though.

mind you, most of the murder and scamming here is done by the government

Vietnam has lazy scammers who don’t even try. Thailand has people that’ll chase you down to scam you then throw you out of a hotel window or chop you apart. Cambodians will sell you to Chinese online scam operations.

Malaysia is definitely the best of mainland SE Asia in terms of safety.

Can second this. Have spent three months in Malaysia working and everyone is polite and everywhere feels safe. My wife can walk down to the shop at night by herself and she never has any problems. Have never had any issues due to infrastructure, it’s pretty easy to get doctors appointments and it’s cheap. Food is good and so is the service. They have big malls with American and European brands so there’s not much you can’t find from home. It’s driver oriented, so if you’re from Europe it can be weird to get used to but Grabs are cheap.
There’s a large enough non-Muslim population that you don’t feel like an outsider, like you can get in some Arab countries. The government is apparently extremely corrupt but as a foreigner travelling there you won’t notice it.

Toilets are nightmares basically anywhere in Asia barring Japan. As the other anon said, nobody uses taxis. It’s all grab. I’m not even sure if regular taxis exist anymore.

And how the frick do you get scammed in Malaysia? There’s no concept of foreigner pricing there unlike Thailand and no matter where you go or what you do prices are very clearly labeled. That includes Grab which shows the fee before you ride a car. The only way to get scammed in Malaysia is to actively seek out being scammed, or I guess get ripped off by hookers. Which, if you’re such a coomer that you’re seeking out hookers in a Muslim country, you’re dumb enough to deserve.

You’re not going to find streetwalkers at noon like you will in Thailand or Cambodia. Malaysia’s sex industry is mostly online and you’re not finding anything unless you’re going out of your way to find it.

Just because you actively sought out hookers in a Muslim country doesn’t mean everyone else is.

Ha Noi was wild. Just be prepared to deal with insane traffic and very little english and you'll be fine. You can find basically everything you might need fairly easily, some things (like say a phone charger or power adapter) might be difficult to find the seller but thats just because the stores are mostly run by small owners and not really concentrated. Almost any place you might stay at will have internet, electricity a bed and bathroom. Scams are limited to people just bugging you on the street so avoidable. Haggling is common and annoying but you dont haggle on e.g. food so dont worry about survival by any means.

Hardest adjustment will probably be the timezone. Have some fun.

I was just in Bangkok. There is a weed shop every 100 feet. The actual smoking fairly innocuous though. I only smelled weed smoke once in a week of walking up and down sukhumvit.

Honestly Thailand is so chill that smoking some weed contributes to the experience. Nothing quite like hanging out out the roof of your building and contemplating the skyline while the thc soaks in.

Didn't see any aberrant or abhorrent behavior either. At least not outside sukhumvit normal.

As for elections the military junta are a real bunch of dinosaurs. I think they will get 'bought out' and take a sideline. There is too much money to be made by opening up Thailand even further.

If you leave Sukhumvit there are literally zero weed shops. They're all right there. I was in Rama 9 which is like 1 mile north of Sukhumvit and there was no weed anywhere. Much more relaxing. Lots of Chinese people though, so if that bothers you, there's that.

I'm also interested in doing my first ever Asia trip in a few months, and noticed how Malaysia is being shilled as an underrated gem on YT.

So I checked on Numbeo and it's quite shocking to see this disparity between Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur. Is this real? How? Do I get off cheaper as a tourist in KL than in BKK?

I'm planning to stay 30 days and work remotely. Beach is a plus, but not necessity for me. I just want a safe and simple first experience, and consider maybe doing this multiple times per year in the future. So far I'm considering Chiang Mai, or Southern Thailand and just now looking into Malaysia.

Also, I'm not interested in prostitutes, but want to try dating. I can get women in Europe, but not happy. Is this completely off limits and hopeless in Malaysia? Or are there enough non-Muslims that I could get matches and set up serious dates with some Chinese girls?
Also, just in general, how much Muslim bullshit would I have to put up with in Malaysia?

      >Is this real? How? Do I get off cheaper as a tourist in KL than in BKK?
I haven't really noticed any major difference in my expenses as a tourist in either place.

Absolutely none beyond muezzin calls and high alcohol tax.

Don’t plan on finding a woman in Malaysia. You might get one, but your odds are way lower than the rest of SE Asia. One reason is due to Islam, another is that Malaysia is pretty well developed and you really don’t have a massive number of women desperate to escape like you do in other countries in the region. You’ll perform just as well with the women as you do at home, but your options will be more limited since sharia law applies to Muslims and Muslim women who have casual sex face legal consequences. That basically leaves you with Chinese women, and they’re getting propositioned by everyone and likely tired of it.

KL is vastly cheaper than Bangkok in my experience. Everywhere in Malaysia is cheaper than Thailand. Far less nickel and diming due to no farang prices. But since it’s pretty obvious you’re going to be eying up girls and wanting to coom, Thailand is clearly what you’re looking for.

        Anonymous

Well the woman situation is disappointing then.

Anyway, I'm still considering Malaysia, specifically KL (unless I'm missing something?) is a good entry point for a first Asia stay. I'm thinking mostly because of English, and it looks more orderly, and just a normal city.
Instead Thailand looks like anywhere I would want to go, is basically pre-made for tourist homosexuals and I would get the same treatment, no choice. Also if Malaysia is really cheaper, then less opportunities to frick up by spending on daily life / scams.

I would think of it as a lifestyle practice on a different continent, a good and safe way to learn and prepare. Maybe next time then I would go to Thailand then.

I’d recommend it, it’s safe, easy to get around and people are friendly. Some of them stare a lot but they don’t mean anything by it, I think they just don’t think it’s rude. You won’t notice all the Muslim stuff aside from architecture/dress/non-halal sections. Go see a few mosques (they have three of four in the world) and listen to the call to prayer without feeling like an outsider and still being able to drink a beer without getting the side eye.

      Anonymous

      >Also, just in general, how much Muslim bullshit would I have to put up with in Malaysia?
it kind of depends how much you go looking for it. but as a tourist you will probably not notice very much.
if you go in a supermarket you might notice that there is a separate "non halal" section where beer, bacon etc are sold
you might notice that the pre-islamic history of malaysia is basically eradicated from any museums and so on
you might notice a distinct lack of most types of cultural events that make life interesting. all media is heavily censored. very few international-level bands play here. for most of them it is not worthwhile because of all the restrictions the religious nuts enforce. as an example it was announced recently that coldplay are going to do a show in KL. of course the local fundie nutjobs are protesting saying that the concert should be cancelled because they "promote degeneracy". fricking coldplay. the most boring band in existence. do me a fricking favour
stick around and talk to some chinese or indian people about the shit they have to deal with because of the fricking muslims
but no, as a tourist you can either avoid it or ignore it. just go to one of the rooftop bars in KL and drink wienertails.

Seriously considering a one way ticket, 'to hell with it all' escapade. I've done Thailand twice before and Cambodia. I wouldnt go back to Cambodia now that Chinks have destroyed the South. But I reckon 90 days in Thailand followed by Laos, Vietnam and maybe Bali.

Are prices in Thailand much increased since covid? Can you still get $5-6 a night huts in the North for instance? What about food and booze? I'm not a stoner but would definitely get involved whilst there seeing as it's now legalised. What are weed prices like? Indonesia recently made it illegal for non-married couples to share hotels together. Malaysia has this for Muslims only, but Indonesia applies this to all people and they’re rapidly expanding their Islamic BS. Enforcement isn’t uniform, but it’s only a matter of time until foreigners make the news and get caned for daring to shower together.

Bali is Hindu so they’ll likely just ignore all that shit, but there will come a time when Muslims will force them to comply.

Basically, if you want to enjoy Indonesia, do it now. 5 years ago would’ve been better, but now is better than it will be 5 years from now.

I met a couple that was affected by this in Malaysia and they were asked for their marriage certificate, which they had. A week later I went with my girlfriend to KL and they didn't ask us for anything, both of us being white+SEA couples.

        Anonymous

It's not illegal yet but hotels do have the right to ask for it. The actual law making it illegal goes into effect in 2025 or something, and only covers Indonesian couples. But again, hotels can interpret it however they want and ask for marriage certificates.
The funny thing is, I've heard most people describe Malaysia as being more religious than Indonesia, but that might be splitting hairs, and Indonesia does have terrorism.

Are ALL Thai ladyboys hookers, or are some of them normal and AIDS-free and just want a loving boyfriend?

There are lots of non-hooker ladyboys in Thailand. Most of them look like men in dresses because they don't have the money to afford hormones and cosmetic surgery. It's still probably the best country in the world to find a passable non-pro LB if that's what floats your boat.

The ladyboys in Pattaya will all be pro. Except maybe some very non-passing you find working in local businesses. Try Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Phuket. The very best looking will be pros, but these areas have lots of ladyboys in general. If you spend long enough in Thailand, you'll stumble across at least some ladyboy that isn't a pro and looks just like a woman, but the giveaway will be their height, their voice, and the fact they look better than most Thai women who haven't had surgery themselves.
I can't speak for Hua Hin but it probably has its share too.

Seems like 90% have been in sex work at some point. Even if they are not currently a hooker they likely fricked and sucked when they were younger for college and troony mess.

Coincidentally 90% are pure coomers with nothing else going on in their lives but hunting for dick, baht, and substances.

the successful/good looking ones you see usually at least have done it as a job before. How else can they afford to get the procedures, implants, surgery, and hormone therapy? its simply out of reach for normal transgenders looking to transition successfully, they have to do it on the side or start working the street full time

I also heard despite being a very gender open society, its still hard for regular ladyboys to find consistent normal jobs. Theres still level of discrimination in higher rungs of business

what are the notions like between real Thai women and trannies? i've added a couple Thai b***hes on Snapchat and all of them put things like "I'M A WOMAN" or "not transsexual" in their profiles.

i made the mistake of saying something along the lines of "you're not fat, you have curves like a real woman" while attempting to simp for one of them and she flipped the frick out thinking i was accusing her of being a stealth troony, so i take it they don't like each other?

      >curves

You made a cultural/social blunder. she was insecure about her weight, you complimented her about her "curves" yet to her she thought it was a backhanded remark on her weight. in Thailand I dont think having curves is taken as a good thing at all, its only being slim or slender that's considered attractive

This. Thai women who aren’t rail thin have serious self esteem issues about being fat. What we consider normal in the US is considered obese in Thailand.

What you consider normal in the US is considered obese in the whole world. American women are whales. The amount of delusional women I've seen in the USA is absurd. Anywhere else in the world, a fat woman in a crop top or booty shorts would be laughed at, in the US it's a common sight.

There simply isnt any other real reason to go to SEA. Unless you're a begpacker. But that doesn't make for an interesting thread. Northeast Asia is nicer in every way imaginable and for most people there are far more accessible beach locations (including in NE Asia anyway) than flying across the world.

            >SK

What. Boring as frick, food sucks if you're not a fan of asiaticslop, there's very little to do as a tourist. If you're not a total autist you can maybe have fun at the clubs, but that's coomer behavior.

SEA has plenty of normie shit to do and is pretty easily navigated. The coomer shid is just cherry on top.

Bros is there any way to enter Thailand legally without having a return flight booked? As far as I know, it's not easy to change the date of a flight once your ticket is bought, right? I want to go and have my departure left open, so wat do?

      Anonymous

I haven't been there but I heard it's the airline that verifies you have a flight out of thailand (it doesn't have to be returning, just out of thailand), and apparently immigration doesn't spend time verifying flights.

There's a service called "Onward Ticket" that you can use to get a reserve a seat on a flight out of thailand for cheap ($15 or so), then you can just cancel the reservation once you're in.
It is also possible to just buy a cheap burner flight to like Cambodia/Laos/Vietnam/Malaysia. whatever is cheapest and just don't get on the plane.
As far as I know doing either one are both legal, as long as you don't overstay the 30 tourism visa.

Changing the date of a flight you already bought might be possible, I think it costs at least $200 but maybe a lot more, or they might not let you do it at all, depends on the airline. Also not booking and leaving the return flight to the last minute could end up costing more.

One thing you could try as well, I heard Expedia US has a 24hr free refund, so you could book your ticket beforehand and cancel once you arrive. Could be tight if your flight is close to 24hrs though.

Pick two. Anything on the beach in an area with a ton of stuff to do is going to be wall to wall condos that are going to run you at least $600 a month off AirBnB. You can probably get some beach shanty in a literally where fishing village for like $150 a month but there won’t be anything around.

For your specifics, definitely Saigon. Hanoi is much more conservative and the zoomer culture while influenced by social media is still much closer to old norms. It's funny to watch girls wearing nice dresses and taking pictures posing in front of everything but you're not going to find a date easily as a tourist. Saigon is still overall far more traditional than say Bangkok or Manilla, but has a modern feeling culture and, frankly, a higher proportion of good looking girls.

Is there actually that much going on in HCMC compared to Bangkok or even east Asian cities like Tokyo/Seoul?
Never been so only judging from social media posts, but the main thing about BKK that caught my eye was that it basically had just as much going on as places like London/NYC/LA but without the pretentious trust fund snobbery of those three cities - everyone I saw in instagram posts of cool events just looked like normal people that I could become friends with easily, whereas hipsters back home are stuck up dickheads for no good reason

The Thais there are usually fine but, aside from the bar girls, they're the least-friendly I've encountered anywhere in the country - these people are jaded by Western sexpats in comparison. The beach is nice enough for a walk or sit and read a book - beautiful sunsets - but only Russians and Thais generally dare swim in the polluted water. It's the 16th (or 17th?) most popular tourist destination in the world so a massive variety of nationalities there, although 99% of the Westerners, Japanese, and Koreans there are coomers. Loads of Chinese; Indians; Russians; and Arabs just on regular holiday though, with the Indians occasionally having a crack at cooming if they can find a cheap enough girl.

Outside the centre down in Jomtien or Pratumnak it's much more chilled, significantly quieter - hardly any Chinese and Indians - and the Thais are a bit warmer, although aesthetically it's still a bit rough around the edges. The beach is better too although still shit for Thailand standards - but if you want nice beaches you can get the 45 min ferry from Pattaya to Ko Laan island for very cheap, which I recommend doing. Nakula is kinda similar to Jomtien but more vehicle traffic along the busy main street leading out of central Patts and the beach isn't conveniently located relative to everything else, like in Jomtien. It's easy to get from either Jomtien or Naklua to Pattaya for 10-20 baht on a songthaew but it can take up to 30-40 mins when the trafffic is really bad in high season sometimes, so not the kind of thing you can to be doing every day probably.

I've barely ever traveled and I'm thinking of flying from Toronto to Bangkok for 2-3 weeks and checkout some cities/temples and see what living there is like since I might want to retire there.
There's no nonstop flights, but lots of different airlines with different 1 stops, so I was wondering, is it worth stopping in one of these areas for longer, like a week?

Eva Air - stops in Taiwan
Air India - stops in India
Philippine Airlines - stops in Manila
Korean Air - stops in Seoul
Turkish Airlines - stops in Istanbul
    Emirates - stops in Dubai
Air Canada - stops in London before going direct to Bangkok with Thai Airways

Based on google flights, all of them are between 20-30hrs and only about a $1k difference or so for a roundtrip in business class (I've never flown business but I really want to for the extra leg room for such long flights).
There's so many different ones to choose from, I have a hard time deciding because I have no idea how good these airlines are. Every one I search has a recent review on tripadvisor about how it's the worst airline ever with no customer service and a million problems.

I was originally planning Taiwan but I didn't see much interesting things worth spending time there.
I saw there was a water park and aquarium in Dubai which seems fun, idk anything about the UAE though.
Manila seems interesting and I'd like to check it out as a potential retirement destination too but seems like everyone has problems with the Philippine Airlines, and apparently they still require cvid testing from unvxd.
Not really interested in India, Instanbul, or London but maybe I just need to look more into them.

I would appreciate hearing what anons think of these airlines/possible destinations, or if I should just spend all that time in Thailand.

You can stopover in Taiwan if you like Taiwanese food. Not a week stopover but couple days. Food culture is pretty big there. My parents are from Taiwan. If not try another airline.

Air India sounds absolutely terrible. Paajets being loud and horny for their lay into Thailand? Cmon dude

Philippine airlines. You could do couple days and week here to recon the place for retirement. not bad idea

Korean air. Tbh never saw that many routes for this airline when booking flight to TH. Heard it’s expensive and the second leg of trip is long. First leg is shorter.

Turkish, Emirates, Air Canada Airlines never saw route for this airline to TH Any route that doesn’t take pacific is suboptimal- flight is too long

        >Air India sounds absolutely terrible. Paajets being loud and horny for their lay into Thailand? Cmon dude
kek good point, I've talked to a few indian people at work and even they told me their airport smells like poo
        >Philippine airlines
Have you flown with them before? They're ranked 77/100 on the Skytrax airline rank chart but idk if that's just a meme
        >Korean air. Heard it’s expensive and the second leg of trip is long. First leg is shorter.
First leg is 13hrs and 2nd leg is 6hrs, it's similarly priced to the other flights $6k-8k (pic related) depending on the dates which I'm very flexible on.
Prices vary wildly on different days between different airlines, or if I make it a multi-city flight and stay at one of the stops, so I think I could most of them work.

Reading your post again I forgot your leaving from Toronto. So it’s possible you won’t take pacific direction. Yeah just go for whatever is lowest price, lowest time in the air, and stopover in country that’s somewhat interesting. I would include Cathay for Hong Kong and ANA air for Japan. The latter is incredibly kino

        >I would include Cathay for Hong Kong
Prices for Cathay seem much more expensive, hitting 10-12k which is a bit much, especially compared to other airlines. Is it worth it?
        >and ANA air for Japan
I could do this but going direct is expensive at 13k. I could get a connecting flight through O'Hare or Los Angeles and get it down to 8k but it seems like I'd really be going out of my way to use ANA.

I'm from London and took Cathay Pacific through Hong Kong. They are one of the best airlines in the world. Whatever you pick, don't take Air Canada, it is one of the worst airlines in the world.

Thanks for the heads up, I heard horrible things about Air Canada from everyone I know as well, it's somehow ranked at 50 in the https://www.worldairlineawards.com/worlds-top-100-airlines-2022/
which makes me question how bad Philippine Airlines are that they're ranked lower than that.

Misread, didn't see you were flying business class. I strongly urge you to reconsider because those are absurd prices - $5000 is likely far more than you would spend during your entire trip.

For perspective, even economy would be $2400.
I haven't had a vacation in 6 years and the last time I flew to iceland in economy I was miserable the entire flight being squished in next to everyone, legs cramping, couldn't sleep, was tired and annoyed by every little thing the first few days, and that was only a ~6 hour flight.
Since it's a round trip it's basically an extra 4-6k to save myself 40 hours of misery and enjoy the vacation more, which I agree is expensive but I don't know how I could do it more affordably. Maybe a cruise? I think that alone would take up my entire vacation.

            airlines
            >Have you flown with them before? They're ranked 77/100 on the Skytrax airline rank chart but idk if that's just a meme
i'm not that anon but i have used them. a few months ago i went from malaysia to australia via manila. it was a work trip, i had a set budget, i wanted business class and they were within the budget.
they were ok. the seats were ok, the food was ok, the service was ok, the lounge at manila was ok
            basically they were just ok
i think a lot of their bad press comes from the kafkaesque nature of the airport in manila

Thanks for sharing your experience, I'm not familiar with their airport, is it that bad?
How would you compare the airline to other ones? Were there any that made you think "that was really great"?

              >I'm not familiar with their airport, is it that bad?
i've read a lot of stories about it, mainly from people who had to change terminal, like from international to domestic
i did have one incident but it was pretty minor. however the airport is pretty confusing and nobody seems to know what to do or where to go and the staff and not helpful
              >How would you compare the airline to other ones? Were there any that made you think "that was really great"?
there are a lot of great asian/middle eastern airlines like cathay pacific, singapore airlines, emirates, qatar etc and philippines is pretty crappy compared to those but of course you have to take cost into account.

                Anonymous

Thanks for the response, emirates is feeling like a better choice then.

Not that other guy, but I would reconsider flying business unless you were getting an upgrade for it at a discount. $5000+ just to be moderately more comfortable isnt worth it, and could be spent having a wayyyy better time at your destination instead. I havent flown business class before but economy class for 12H+ isnt that bad, I get in 1 1-2H of sleep. compared to business where one could sleep longer 3-4H? for massive increase in price ionno

I flew Cathay to HK I found the food to be quite enjoyable and seats were good

If Philippine airlines is rated low, its probably for valid reasons. I wouldnt fly them unless I specifically wanted to get to PH and there werent other options and I was on shoestring budget

                >economy class for 12H+ isnt that bad
Different people handle it better, I was ready to end it all after 6 hours, there's no way I'll be able to last 15 hrs, I'd rather stay at home than go through that again.
                >5000+ just to be moderately more comfortable isnt worth it
It's not just levels of comfort, it's between being comfortable vs painful tired miserable.
                >could be spent having a wayyyy better time at your destination instead
Lets say I budget ~15k for the whole trip. Am I really going to benefit that much from only being able to spend 8k instead of 13k in Dubai/Thailand? It's only 3 weeks. I could still spend $380/day and have a great time. What more am I able to get out of it if I could spend $620/day?
What if I bumped my budget up to 20k? 30k? It might seem like a lot but if I average how many times I take a vacation that's only $3.3k-5k/year, which is about average.

I can't really think of anything else that I could spend $5k on that would improve a vacation as much as a comfortable flight when the budget is already pretty high. More women? More luxurious hotels? More expensive restaurants? More wild/expensive activities? idk none of that sounds too worthwhile in comparison.

                >I flew Cathay to HK I found the food to be quite enjoyable and seats were good
I hear good things about Cathay, unfortunate that they seem to be mostly pacific flights. Seems very pricey in Toronto, cheapest I can find are all $4k+ and that's in economy.
                >If Philippine airlines is rated low, its probably for valid reasons. I wouldnt fly them unless I specifically wanted to get to PH
Yeah I'm thinking it might be worth coughing up a little bit extra to fly EVA Air if I do decide to go to PH

                I am the first guy.
Painful tired miserable is Thailand 50% of the time. Are you sure you want to retire here? Have you been there before? - $4000 for leg stretching is not worth it speaking from experience. It's an absurd amount of money. It will buy you a third of a year in a luxury Thai apartment or a whole year in a not so luxury apartment. Is twelve hours worth 365 days to you? If so why the frick are you retiring in Thailand?
You are budgeting $15k?? That is a year of Thailand rent included.
If you want to spend it its your money and nobody will judge you or know you spent it. Just know that it is excessive.

What makes it those things 50% of the time? I heard about burning season and the heat and humidity, but it sounds like it's still fine indoors.
I haven't been there before, I was planning this to be both a vacation (first half), and getting a feel for the place (2nd half) where I would live like normal there so I can better gauge if it is somewhere I'd like to retire.
                >- $4000 for leg stretching is not worth it speaking from experience.
Yeah I get that it's not a lot of value to most people, personally I can't stand being elbow to elbow brushing shoulders surrounded by people for more than an hour without feeling like freaking out. I can't stand packed movie theatres either.
It's not like I want to spend a lot of money but I don't see any other way to avoid it without spending money
                >It's an absurd amount of money. It will buy you a third of a year in a luxury Thai apartment or a whole year in a not so luxury apartment. Is twelve hours worth 365 days to you? If so why the frick are you retiring in Thailand?
That's a good way of looking at it, using it to pad out my retirement for more safety would be the financially correct decisions.
I'm not a millionaire only have about 400k, so I know it'd go a much longer way if I just saved it, so why can't I just suck it up and deal with being miserable on 40hrs of flights? I guess I'm just very adverse to being stuck next to people, I probably have some mild autism/aspergers.
                >You are budgeting $15k?? That is a year of Thailand rent included.
Honestly I haven't set a budget yet. That was more to demonstrate that there isn't much to spend money on "at the destination" that would improve things that much.
I think I'd have to really go out of my way to hit that too. I imagine the flights would probably be 70-80% of the cost of the entire trip

That’s primarily what gets tourists annoyed with Thailand. It’s hot, all the time, it’s this thick sloppy relentless sauna that doesn’t stop ever. It’s somewhat better during nov to march. there’s no way to avoid it unless you just never go outside and stay in air conditioned hotels or malls. But you’ll find eventually you have to move around and going outside walking around for about hour, it starts to zap your willpower + energy. Only way is to suck it up and stop being a b***h and eventually maybe it won’t suck so bad

The main problem is that the terminals are not connected to one another so you have to check out and in to transfer. Besides you need to take a shuttle or a taxi to the next terminal. I wouldn’t do a 1 day transfer in Manila until they get their new airport up in a few years.

I haven't been but what I can find online it sounds like they might not even check anymore. If they do it's possible a fake paper with proof of vaccination might work - unless they coordinate with every single country's healthcare database to verify, but I doubt anyone does that. If you're honest they might just ask you to quarantine for 5 days but not enforce it.
All in all there's always the risk of being denied entry. Up to you how much you want to risk it.

    >no sex talk in the sex work capital of the world
Get off your high horse and accept reality, moron.
I just got back from a month in Thailand, great experience all around. From my experience as an American passport holder, no proof of onward travel was needed, neither was any vaccination proof. As a matter of fact 90% of people in Suvarnabhumi didn't have a mask on. I spent 2 weeks in Pattaya and 2 traveling around the temples and villages in northern Isan. I didn't initially go there to coom but being a nonreligious white man in my mid 20's, it's hard not to. Especially because I am vain and went to Soi 6 to have women crawling all over me. I eventually met one who was fricking amazing, beautiful soul, but me being the piece of shit that I am ghosted her after promising to take care of her. I absolutely loved the country and spent way more time there than expected. Next year I want to visit Vietnam and Lao, but in all honesty I might just end up back in Thailand. Beautiful country full of beautiful people. As a side note, I did try out a lady boy once. It was a bad experience for me. There's a major difference between a horny woman and a horny ladyboy. You can literally smell the contrast in pheromones and it's uncanny.

I've never ridden a motorcycle/scooter before, but I want to do it in the SEA countryside. Will any of the rental places teach a farang like me how to operate it or do I have to know somebody?

If you've ever ridden a bicycle downhill you can ride a scooter. There's a reason you see 12 year olds riding them all the time in SEA.

            Anonymous

This only applies to developed countries. The 12 year olds in SEA have been getting carried around on those things since birth so they've intuitively picked up on how to navigate traffic. They also adhere to moronic superstitious beliefs (if you get hit it's because of bad karma so you should donate money to a temple instead of investing in a helmet and brake pads). I've seen people drive in the Thai countryside with their lights completely off at night. When asked about this people say "it's to avoid attracting ghosts". One guy told me "it's to save battery". Personally I wouldn't take cues from inbred ass backwards brown people but you do you man.

No, don’t listen to this anon. I’ve come across too many fricking moronic Western tourists with bruises and awful scratches because they thought the same. Take a brief motorcycle introductory course on a manual, and learn stuff such as counter steering, throttle control and low-speed maneuvering so you won’t end up in a coffin.

Again, if you were sheltered to the point of not understanding how two wheeled vehicles move they you may as well have a nice day now. The only challenge comes from learning local traffic habits. You're unfortunately too stupid to comprehend what I'm saying.

He's being antagonistic for no real reason, ignore the attitude. That being said, SEA isn't the place to learn how to ride a motorcycle/scooter. Yes most have a DCT/automatic but the roads/traffic are much more unforgiving. If you're insistent on it, wear ALL the safety gear they provide, and I would insist on at minimum finding a full face helmet.

I wouldn't even think about trying to learn it in Bangkok. I want to ride it through the countryside. Do you know anything about getting a license there? Can I just walk in and take the test?

              Anonymous

You don't need a license anywhere in SEA. Go to a smaller town in whatever country you're in, stay at a hotel/hostel that rents bikes, and rent one and take it out at night when the roads are empty.
If you've got time to kill and you're still nervous, look up a scooter/moped/motorcycle training/safety course in your destination country. (I included all those slashes because the same shit is advertised differently.) You'll pay $50 to ride a beat-up scooter on a dirt track you can drop as much as you want. If you do that, might as well pay extra to learn how to drive manual.

All these questions you have could be answered by a series of Google searches and a YouTube tutorial.
Obtain an international driver's license prior to travel. Google rental facilities in your desired base location. Don't let them take your passport as collateral.

Does anyone know how long it takes on average to get an apartment in the Philippines and anything on the process in general? I'm going to book an airbnb for a month from one of the places that look like hotels to be safe but I don't know anything about actually renting an apartment and I haven't been able to find a guide on the process online anywhere. I have asked in the Philippine general but everyone just talks about cooming all the time. Any information would help thanks.

I didn’t go there for cooming, I was referring to the overall atmosphere, how dedicated the locals are to their culture, religion and aesthetics despite living in the globalized world, the k i n o landscape, the friendliness of the locals despite having to deal with moronic bogans, bongs and slavs all the time, and the cuisine.
But it seems about a great place to go to if you wanna plow white women every day.
About the local women, good luck. It’s not very common for them to even genuinely date a foreigner. There are loads of BWC-hungry, repressed Javanese girls there though.

Due to covid, most Japanese international traveling escorts went back to Japan. It is possible that they are selling their wares again now that it's over, but I haven't seen any typical advertisements.

I highly suggest staying off the motorbike as a newbie to Thailand, and just in general.

I know you think it sounds convenient or even romantic (in the adventure sense) to ride a motorcycle around Thailand, but it is the #1 most dangerous and risky thing you can possibly do except snorting random drug powders in a club (everything has fent in it now, don't do it).

If you absolutely must do it, be the guy who dutifully wears a good closed helmet every time. It will save your life or even just your face/teeth when(not if) you get into a crash.

Rent a bright colored bike and put extra lights on it. Frick put led strips on it. Do what it takes to be visible, and never drive around after 00:00, because it's all drunks or tired/strung out drivers.

    Seriously.

          not an exclusive list but:

          - smaller population
          - geographically better located (on trade route and also by most important entreprot in region: singapore)
          - plenty of oil (heard of Petronas towers)

I don't see how a smaller population is necessarily a good predicator for living standards, nepal is about as fricked up as india if not moreso for instance.

The geography is broadly similar, close to all the big players in east asia.

Oil? Ok, many countries have this and they're not all Norway.

I'm no expert but Taiwan does something like 80-90% of all relevant semi conductor stuff.

Not on an absolute basis, but if you have finite resources like natural resources, a smaller population means more resources per capita. 30 million people vs 100 million people in case of Malaysia vs Philippines.

              >The geography is broadly similar, close to all the big players in east asia.

Philippines is close but it's not on the existing trade route. If you go from Singapore you head up to China and from China you head out into the Pacific. Any detour from that route will increase shipping costs

              >Oil? Ok, many countries have this and they're not all Norway.

It's a resourcel ike any other that not only ensures energy security domestically but is an easy way to earn foreign exchange. Malaysia has 3.6 billion proven reserves, Philippines has only 138 million and a much larger population, 3x as large to "share" that resource.

              >I'm no expert but Taiwan does something like 80-90% of all relevant semi conductor stuff.

Malaysia long ago, decades ago won a piece of the semiconductor manufacturing chain. Now all the major players are in Malaysia. It's the one country in SEA that has a semiconductor industry. Yes, the rest (most of it) is in Taiwan, Korea and China.

To explain the power situation in the Philippines requires a whole 2-hr essay, but to make it short and simple
            >only privatized electricity sector in ASEAN(aside from Singapore)
            >ruled by actual oligarchs
            >sketchy competition in generation
            >reliance on imported coal

Compare this to the other ASEAN nations where the state owns all the electricity transmissions and distribution grids, while also subsidizing the rates.

These tests don't measure IQ, they measure the ability to take a test. THe wealthier a country is, the more money spent on education, the better prepared students/people will be to take a test.

They literally measure the IQ you goddamn fricking moronic goober, look up the fricking sources, some of them even show socioeconomic status on the sampling rates. The notion that “education improves IQ drastically” is pure cope. That’s the whole thing about non-verbal tests. You need to teach a person how to do 2+2. You don’t need to teach a person patterns and spatial relationships. That’s pure genetics.
Jesus I’ve yet to come across a single soul on this whole cantonese noodle forum who have even the slightest idea about what an IQ survey is and how it is done.

Don't be stupid. Look at some of the sample sizes in those so-called "national IQ" tests you're citing: 22 people!

LMAO. You really have to be a moron to believe a test given to 22 people is going to tell you anything about a supposed national IQ.

            >How the frick do you start a coal fire?
If we use paper, it's usually significantly less toxic than glossy color-print magazines. Other than that, we'll also use wood chips, wood shavings, dry grass, etc.

Some people use "charcoal starter" which is glorified lighter fluid, but there are people who don't like to use those kinds of fuels because it can affect the taste of the food. At the very least, we're not supposed to use fricking gasoline (or "petrol" as you Europeans call it).

And I'll admit I missed one important detail. This Filipino I know fueled the entire fire with gasoline & magazines. He didn't even add any wood or charcoal, he just kept adding more gasoline & magazines.

What the frick, but in all fairness, I’ve been virtually all over Philippines for years and the only occasions I’ve seen someone burn magazines is when they are burning trash. Never have I seen anyone use anything besides wood or coal when grilling. Not even literal homeless people in Manila use anything besides wood when cooking rice on the street.
It’s likely you just happened to come across one goofball whose parents made him like that by grilling their food like that.

Manila airport left a terrible taste in my mouth, but I want to go back and give the country another chance. Which islands/cities do you recommend I prioritize? I'm thinking of renting a condo in Manila for the duration of my visa as a sort of home base, and traveling around to different islands for one or two days at a time. I also would like to meet girls as I know jack shit about the language and a translator would be nice.

I would suggest Cebu City instead. It’s cheaper, and is situated near a nice beachy area, though it’s full of shanties and broken roads. Most people prefer it though because as said, it’s near some nice beaches, Cebu island itself is pretty nice overall, lot’s of nice girls there, despite alot of shanties it has way less homeless and street kids, and its location also makes it easier and cheaper to go to eg Bohol, Siquijor and Blacks. Camote islands are pretty comfy too.

Look at it just with the cultural output, thais and viets read, there's bookshops everywhere, they have a literary tradition, art, culture.

Flips are completely anti-intellectual, noone reads, they don't even have a proper film industry like the aforementioned.

Only Thailand has that. They are the only ones in the region that produce noteworthy movies and series.
And this doesn’t even gauge IQ in any sense. It just shows which nation has a more refined policy on the entertainment industry. Korea blows all of its East Asian counterparts in this regard. Does that mean Taiwan is a 70 IQ shithole?
