Sri Lanka was the worst country I've ever visited. Absolute dog shit. Everyone tries to scam you, the cities have ankle deep trash everywhere, people are ugly as frick, food is terrible, everything looks like shit, what more can I say? Don't ever go there.
Sri Lanka was pretty OK imo.
>everyone tries to scam you
Not more than Rome or Paris.
>the cities have ankle deep trash everywhere
There's definitely too much littering, but haven't seen big piles of trash anywhere.
>people are ugly as frick
True
>food is terrible
I liked the food in general and loved the alcoholic drinks (Lion Stout & Arrack). At least the seasoning is better than Euroslop and it won't make you liquid shit for 2 weeks straight.
>everything looks like shit
The nature is amazing, but the cities are to be avoided.
Our biggest frustrations were the jeeps in the national parks, creating literal traffic jams on dirt tracks as soon as someone spotted an elephant or leopard, skipping all the other animals. The tipping system in Sri Lanka is moronic as well.
> NOOOOOO!! YOU HAVE TO TIP THE LUGGAGE BOY PER SUITCASE, NOW YOU GAVE TOO LITTLE!
> NOOOOOOO!! YOU DON'T NEED TO GIVE THAT MUCH TO THE WAITER, IT'S ONLY A MAIN COURSE!
> NOOOOO!! YOU HAVE TO TIP THE DRIVER OF THAT JEEP, BUT NOT THE DRIVER OF THIS JEEP!!
>everyone scams me
LOL, your uptight ass deserved it. Sri Lanka is not Thailand, where self-control and saving face is paramount. South Asian culture, you bullshit with people when you are doing business. Then if you feel like someone hasn't treated you right or has named an unfair price, you argue with them, often for an extended period of time. I've seen so many Tamil Indians engaging in public arguments in Kuala Lumpur, often escalating into abusive shouting matches. They point and yell, call each other filthy names, but never get physical. That's just the way they do things.
I bet you thought you sounded like a cool world traveler when you wrote this but actually it just makes you sound like a wide eyed moron amazed at uncivilized behavior that you’ve confused with “their culture.”
>The tipping system in Sri Lanka is moronic as well.
You can blame Americans for that
Damn who would have thought Americans have control over a country like that. Sounds pretty based
This but only for Colombo, the rest of the country is nice
>the rest of the country is nice
No
Did you go to Bentota, Hikkaduwa or Kandy? All nice
>Kandy
absolute shithole. knee deep garbage
There was nothing there. I just wandered around some gated neighborhoods. Town center? What? Nah.. didn't see it.. maybe there is a place for men to relax there? I did find some nice inviting ladies in Colombo but they scammed me so damn hard. I came back and yelled at them and called them dogs. It was so bad. I'll probably go back for vengeance again.
How much were you scammed for? Sounds rough.
India is far worse. Sri Lanka has the same annoyances but to a lesser level.
I was there about 10 years ago.
Was inside a well-guarded hotel.
Went with a local "tour guide" instead of some official hotel-agreed company and ended up having to pay on every stop they did. We went to Safari, had to wait 4 hours, and they were told to give additional pay because we managed to see a tiger (??!). Ended with some awful restaurant with awful food where I left 5000 Rupee as tip and the waiter started screaming at our guides because I guess they had a deal where he brings rich folk to the place. They spend the whole time drinking. Every hour I was afraid they would leave us on the road. On top of it all I got sunburned. Every day on the beach there were sellers trying to scam you.
It's sure was memorable.
I'm curious why people visit Sri Lanka; is there something there that India doesn't already have? I don't know a lot about the place. I understand Bangladesh exists due to religion but I don't understand why Sri Lanka exists and what makes it stick out.
If it could get its act together it's a tropical island.
Sri Lanka has (or had) resort hotels set up to cater to european markets, which India doesn't really have. I went 20 years ago or so and it was pretty nice, but I don't think recent years have been kind to the place.
In terms of sights its also pretty compressed and you can see a lot. Highlights for me were elephant sanctuaries, Sigiriya, and the old colonial tea plantations in the middle of the island. Never cared to go to the main cities aside from Kandy, which was a bit shit.
Lol babby’s first time in Asia? I thought the food was great.
It’s a lot like southern India but it is (or was) fanatically Buddhist which makes it culturally very different.
>I thought the food was great.
You have shit taste then
thats the northern part, the rest of the country is more buddhist and sinhalese which is more like an indo aryan people than dravidian.
Im in Kandy right now, going to Sigiriya tomorrow.
I dont want to take the train to Ella, and going back on the same train track to Colombo seems a bit of a waste.
I still have 2 more days after Sigiriya and Ive already done Colombo and Kandy. What should I see around the middle of the country?
Sigiriya is full of scamming shit skin homosexuals
I've been to over 80 countries, Sri Lanka scammers are easy mode tbh.
Also, in response to OP:
>everyone tries to scam you
Morrocos, Turkey and Egypt are much worse
>the cities have ankle deep trash everywhere
Here is not nearly as bad as Vietnam or Indonesia
>people are ugly as frick
Not as ugly as India itself, but they are nice af.
>everything looks like shit
Dunno whatchu talkin about. Phillipines cities are a much bigger eye sore.
Hey guys this massive shit hole isn't that bad because look! These other massive shit holes are even more shittier!
>You're moronic
So we can all agree it’s an average Asian country.
>Phillipines cities are a much bigger eye sore.
Flip cities could have benefitted from a WW2 firebomb razing just so they could rebuild. They probably would have fricked that up too though
At least vietnam has functional sidewalks in the cities even if the never ending stream of motorbikes makes crossing the street a headache
Flip cities were destroyed during WW2. What the frick do they teach you in school?
>They probably would have fricked that up too though
Pretty much. No idea how the frick this country is so fricking moronic at everything. Even Vietnam which was bombed and invaded by two super powers 40 years ago has a more competent government and is overtaking these morons.
It really is remarkable that despite being a totalitarian 20th century Marxist-Leninist regime that Vietnam is one of the best places in SEA lol, says a lot about how shit the area really is.
>Here is not nearly as bad as Vietnam or Indonesia
You're full of shit.
Climb the mountain adjacent to Srigriya, forgot what it’s called. Dambulla Temple is also worthwhile, but watch out for the thieving monkeys (I mean the apes).
IMO the tea plantations are a big disappointment, though it’s nice having tea served to you by groveling white-shirted coolies
Exploring Pollonaruwa on a rented bicycle was great. I never went to Anuradhapura.
the country is ultra poor and the government is run by bros. the culture imprints poor behavior. every person there has trauma, which just repeats onto the next generation. the country literally had a civil war over difference in language. people are just trying to survive there. if you know a local, you can avoid all the foreigner fees. but the country itself is different — you can't expect to have all the niceties you have elsewhere.
>the country literally had a civil war over difference in language.
The Tamils and Sinhalese have different religions mostly which is a perfectly normal reason to start a war.
This war was not over religion. Sinhalese felt entitled, thinking that their race, their language was of that of the ancestors, thinking they were the only ones that deserved Sri Lanka. They discriminated against Tamils (the minority), which was eventually met with a reaction. Other differing religions (muslims) just sat on the sidelines during the war.
visit the cricket fields
>Everyone tries to scam you
Strange, Sri Lanka was one of the few places where hardly anyone bothered me, and a polite 'No, thank you, have a nice day' was invariably enough to disengage, to the point where the word 'scammer' feels inappropriate. Friendly locals were actually a good part of what made the trip okay.
The endless zig-zag up-down roads and high population density were actually the worst bits. Got car sick for the first time in 25 years or so.
The only reason you would want to land in Sri Lanka or Bangladesh is for the hopefully short wait to transfer your flight to India.
Ive been there like 18y ago.
I stayed at very good hotel that sadly didnt had private beach. The amount of locals that wanted to sell you smth/scam you when you went to beach was africa tier. Even arabic countries were better in my expirience. Besides real hellhole jungles with leeches everywhere (its a real expirience, try some hikes with a local guide when you are there, you can really see how hard is to live in those conditions) its no different from india.
If anyone want to expirience hindi culture/indian peninsula I recommend just going to Nepal. No sea, but best people with least amount of scam while you still can expirience virgin nature.
>makes inflammatory racist comments
>gets deleted, not even banned (very gracious)
>"omg they deleted my comments! it must be true!"
>does it again and on every south asian thread
>this is totally not obsession at all
>totally didn't get rejected by a sri lankan girl at all
mods are too nice to you racist losers and you still think you are the victim.
Good morning sir!
Anyone could have told you that
Haha I found it. Avana Resort. 3/10 would recommend.
