Medellin - lots of things to do, like nightlife. I went horseback riding half hour away in rio Black and it was really fun, you ride from the afternoon past sundown and the locals will be passing around tequila and beer as you're enjoying the beautiful scenery. the place was called fonda caballo loco. I would also recommend going to language exchanges to meet locals, a lot of locals go there just to practice their english and it's mostly just a casual drinking and having fun vibe

Bogota - didnt stay there but it's cold and haven't heard many good things about it

    Baranquilla - boring, don't go

Santa Marta - pretty small, amazing beaches, a lot of nature nearby. Best beaches were playa blanca and cabo san juan

Cartagena - interesting history as it was a navy base, the old town is very cool and had a cool navy museum. Scuba dived here and the water was so warm, didn't need a wet suit. It was a lot better than scuba diving in santa marta which was colder water and less interesting sea life.

A lot of locals also go there to turn tricks, be careful.

I remember my last Medellin language exchange. It was only a few months ago. Of two local girls I spoke to, one was a Venezuelan single mother who immediately mentioned she needed 2 million COP to visit her family. The other was the ugliest b***h I ever saw. She came two weeks in a row to the same language exchange wearing the same outfit. She spoke no English and seemingly had no interest in practicing. She was hooking up with some fat 30 year old American guy on the dance floor by the end of the night.

I got a sketchy vibe from her. I saw her two consecutive weeks at this event. The first week, she showed up with a guy who looked like he hadn't had a decent meal for a long time. She spoke with a group I was with briefly and was trying to get us to buy her drinks. After I shepherded my friends away from them it seems she had the good sense to show up alone the second week. There was an awkward tension on the dance floor one moment when we made eye contact, and she knew I knew what she was doing.

This is the kind of girl that's out there scoping guys and robbing them. The muerto de hambre she was with was probably waiting for a call from her, once she had finished drugging the poor sap who took her home.

so basically...note to self...watch out picking up women from places in colombia.

In other countries, language exchanges tend to be sausagefests. If you go to one in Spain, girls will be outnumbered three to one by lonely single men in their 30's. But in Colombia, the genders are actually balanced. Yet the level of English proficiency in Spain is an order of magnitude greater than in Colombia. Colombians can't speak English for shit, even young and educated ones. Need I say more?

The only reliable place to meet women in Colombia is through Colombian friends. But good look meeting trustworthy Colombians in the first place. The whole country is a nest of scammers. Taxis and bars charging you gringo prices, muggings, romance scams, gold diggers. Nothing will probably happen to you, but unless you really know what you're doing and your Spanish is great, I'd suggest you go somewhere else. Colombians do NOT look at foreign men with a sympathetic eye, it's fricking exhausting when you realize that living there you are basically walking around with a target on your back.

When I went to the one in medellin everyone was speaking english. This was at the wandering Paisa hotel. I didn't catch any of the sketchy shit you are talking about. But it also was outside of the most touristy areas and it was inside a hostel so maybe it attracted less of those types.

Admittedly, everyone at the language exchange I described was having a good time too. I just seem to have a keen eye for human frailty, and wanted to get across an idea of the sort of person who could be waiting in the background, looking for foreigners to prey on.

There were probably 50 people at the nightclub that night, most of them decent, ordinary people looking to have a good time. But to say that the other kind of person doesn't exist would be dishonest. I'm just trying to keep anyone reading this from ending up like pic related.

Gringo pricing is a popular myth. You should try to use the taxi apps rather than hailing them off the street though. Kidnappings have been known to occur. After a week in the country I was only really worried about getting pickpocketed. Most of these issues are solved if you just go to Bogota instead of Medellin, though.

You should definitely be careful. Normal women won't approach you on the street in Colombia, they generally meet their partners through mutual friends. Women there are much more willing to have sex, but are ironically more conservative about it - they don't want to appear like the sexually liberated woman that North American girls pretend to be.

      >medellin
I've been there, total shithole. dodgy asfrick got offered coke by guys who looked like they wanted to rob me several times. Hookers everywhere.
Did a tour of comuna 13 though which was pretty interesting.

      >cartagena
Very touristy, cool navy museum. You can see everything in a day. Staying any longer gets boring.

      >Bogota
I recommend going to Monserrate, you can get a cable car up and it has amazing views. Kind of hard to breathe up there because of altitude.

      >Armenia
I stayed in a hacienda outside armenia which was really cool, they have a better bus service than back home. Arnenia itself is an absolute shithole but the surrounding towns are pretty nice. I had the best steak I've ever eaten there, tomahawk argentinian steak that cost me 7 euro

Also once you get there you should get a prepaid "Claro" sim card. you can get for cheap with mobile data and calls. Don't get it from a supermarket, they are ran by morons who don't know how to activate them. I got mine from a stall outside a market, or go to a claro shop

        >got offered coke by guys who looked like they wanted to rob me several times
This happened to me twice in Bogota. Three times if you count the guy who didn't look like he wanted to rob me.
        >Kind of hard to breathe up there because of altitude.
I thought this was made up but I genuinely felt better in Cali - though I live at sea level normally so even Cali was not great.
