mountains seems fun, but in greece there is no freedom to roam so I feel you'll be mauled by 20 guard dogs if you just wanna explore some random path unlike in scotland or the alps. In athens it's better to rent a scooter and also on most islands unless you have a family. There are a lot of nice beaches, but some are bland sandy beaches with no marine life which can be shitty if you want to snorkle. That one in your pic is also just nice to look at but not really worth to go there, there are way better part just close by.
I am Greek, If I were you I would go to an Island especially now that its summer time. I don't recomend Athens to be a place to stay during summer season. If you are able to spend much you better go to the island of Paros/Mykonos/Santorini and if you wanna spend a less you just go to Ios but please dont stay long on Athens just a day to see the archeological areas. Athens is not for summer at all. Even Greeks in Summer all they want is to escape from Athens and go party on Islands
Anyway ask me anything if you want
What's Athens like for cooming?
Would you recommend any historical sites in rural areas that aren't filled with tourists?
In Athens especially now in Summer there are tourist everywhere. Most of them want to go to islands with the ships but they stay a day or two in Athens just to see the places. Every historical sites are filled with tourists, to be honest I don't know any place not to have many.
Now, aside of that you need to visit the "must go" places. Start with Acropolis after the Acropolis museum walk your way to see the temple of olympian zeus then go kalimarmaro and across the street through the Zappeion walk your way to Syntagma square following to the Academy of athens ( one of my favorite buildings for photos). After that you can go back to syntagma going down Ermou street and go to Monastiraki, after that go Thisio and but not from ermou street. There next to the train station there are many archeological sights such as Agora/Temple of hephaestus ancient athenian prison etc. Take a souvlaki to eat and if you like right before sunset take a taxi to lycabettus on the saint george church and see one of the best views ever, but it has many people there (very good for photos capturing all athens)
I am going to Greece in early spring. I want to go to Patmos. What is the best way? How should I go about this? I just got married and I am going to Italy and Greece on my honeymoon but I am a schizo and mostly concerned with Patmos
Since there is no airport in Patmos you can if you want to go fly to Athens and then go with ferry on Patmos but at that time that you are going to visit there will be very few ppl there. What I mean is that in Greece most of the island are empty during winter and early spring, most of them getting population early May. I am not saying that it will not be good or smthing but the weather and the vibe will be completely different than those that are in the summer season of Islands (May-early September)
what will the weather and vibe be like? I’d rather not be around crowds
room temperature to cold but with rain. But Im telling you in general the place will feel like dead only early may will start to be alive
I actually changed the date to early may. I notice pascha is may 5th. what is it like during then?
>
Pascha is like Easter for Greeks. It is a two week period that most Greeks go back to their villages/Islands. In the Big Saturday there is a tradition of everyone going on the church for the resurrection of Jesus throwing firecrackers and fireworks. Each island has its own unique way of celebration such as Chios where there is the Rocket war (One of the best thing you can experience) In Kalymnos they throw very big dynamites(bombs) in the air making tremendous sound all over the island. Paros also is getting very hype the last years in Easter time. I have not been in Patmos to be honest but I believe they have the usual easter celebration of firecrackers.
how long do I really need to see athens, with a day trip to delphi and a day trip to the temple of Poseidon. is like 3 - 4 days enough for that, then I can fuck off to the islands to relax and experience easter festivities?
Yes 3-4 days would be enough Athens in Easter is good but it has some bad vibe. Its like all of the people wanted to be somewhere else.
I have encountered a dilemma. It appears they do not release the ferry schedule until god knows when, and I do not know how I should go about making accommodations on the islands without knowing the ferry schedule. it is making me feel like I am going to have to fly from Athens to Santorini and stay there the whole time, as I cannot book hotels without knowing the when the ferries will be available. do you know when they will release the schedule? I heard they have to be approved by the government and sometimes they take a long time? But easter is late next year so I dunno. what should I do?
Ferries go every day or every other day especially in Easter so don't worry. Its because you want to reserve way ahead of time. Thats why its like in 9 months ahead
I was able to book a short flight from athens to santorini at 11:30 pm on Palm Sunday to my hotel in ois. I am staying until at least the Tuesday after Easter, and I guess I can figure out a ferry ride to patmos during that time. thanks for all your help anon
Also I am going to Corinth, Epidaurus, Delphi, and Meteora. Should I bother to go to Cape Sounion too for the Poseidon temple?
>Also I am going to Corinth, Epidaurus, Delphi, and Meteora. Should I bother to go to Cape Sounion too for the Poseidon temple?
If you go to Corinth and Epidaurus it would be stupid not to hit the beautiful port town of Nafplio that has a great, well preserved medieval castle as well. It is just outside of Epiduarus.
Meteroa is also definitely worth going to, the monastery on the abutting cliffs are really something to behold. I would recommend to rent an e-bike at:
https://meteoraebike.com/
With an e-bike you can stop anywhere on the side easily to take photos, unlike with a car and you can take in and enjoy the views and scenery more.
I actually am going to Nafplio as well
>Academy of athens ( one of my favorite buildings for photos)
also good spot to take pictures of junkies doing opiods. Don't wear sandals though, might step on a needle.
Is it worth to go to the casino that’s on top of the mountain? For the view and restaurant only
what casino
Regency casino mont parnes. You can take a cable car to go there apparently.
the last greek thread in the catalog had some really good guides on cooming
Go in the archives and search for the last greek thread there was some really good info on cooming and just general information in the last thread by very based greek diasporans
I think it was
, thread was opened on July 2 and there's loads of info about cooming in Greece in there at a glance.
Yeah
Athens is fucking shit, filled with tourists and pakis. Go do the ruins for a day or two and gtfo. Get a ferry to Hydra or some other buttfuck island which has limited amounts of tourists. Renting a car is good for the mainland since the highways are OK and therefor fast to travel on. Maybe go see Meteora and its monasteries, good boomer destination. Avoid seaside traps because theyre is gonna be filled with thousands of chav tourists. Unless you are a pervert and enjoy looking at the absolute state of the general public, go to Parga.
Dunno if this would interest you but you can get pretty cheap flights to Cairo which is about 2 hours away. Last time I went to Athens we did a day trip to Cairo, saw the Pyramids, Sphinx, and museum and then flew back to Athens. It was quite a cramped day but you could easily just overnight it instead.
Is it easy to get into Egypt? I have heard horror stories about dealing with customs
It's easy enough. You can buy a tourist visa upon arrival at the airport for $25 USD.
Cairo itself is kind of shitty though - packed with people, traffic is lol ridiculous (I don't know how folks get around), and dirty/polluted as fuck. The old Cairo museum is pretty great though. In general if you *don't* want to hit up the museum, best approach would be to get a guide to meet you at the airport and drive you around/take you to the things you want to see (Dahshur and Saqqara are both much better than Giza, though once you're there you might as well go to Giza for the sphinx).
Luxor is much nicer than Cairo and surroundings, but probably too far for a day trip from Athens.
ill pass, sounds like shit
If you want to have fun try explaining to the locals how certain cultural things (food, drink, etc.) are actually Turkish and not Greek
>Greece related but not related to OP
There's a load of £118 British Airways business class flights from London Gatwick to Santorini or Kos right at the end of October available. Only issue is there are not really any good return flights. There's ~£45 flights to Athens from Santorini several times per day, and from Kos it's a <30min ferry over to Bodrum Turkey a couple of times a day. I spent a few hours trying to put together a slightly larger trip I liked the look of but didn't really get there so I'm gonna pass. Thought it was interesting enough to post anyway
...In the end I actually booked one. Seems everything on Santorini shuts down from the start of November so just 4 nights (3 full days) there for me, then over to Athens for 5 nights (4 full days). I was already looking for a short and cheap med trip around that time to do a bit of experimenting, Greece wasn't one I was looking at but I have never been so why not
hate to be that anon, but looked up everything I want to see in Athens (going there tomorrow) but still couldn't find any info about cooming, any tips/sites?

should I go to the temple or not
Not OP, but will join in asking about Thessaloniki.
Travelling with my mom to meet relatives for 5-6 days late October.
Anything I should know beforehand?
Any recommended hotel for around $120 a night?
I really enjoy mountains, which is why I've planned to visit both Mount Olympus and Mount Taygetos. I'm looking forward to an extended trip to fully enjoy the natural wonders they offer. I'll be traveling with two friends, and we'll use our Tap cards to withdraw cash for the journey. Our travel is scheduled for the second week of December. Hopefully, we're safe.
