STRONGLY advise against any Vietnam travel. US Department of State recently put out a notice, indicating that Vietnamese border guards (aka Charlie) will plant drugs in unsuspecting Westerners. Nothing can be done either, and you don’t want prison there.

Yeah the first three or four bánh mì I had in Vietnam were totally mediocre and boring, so I get you and I don't think you sound salty, but the delicious ones are here. You may just need some help finding them, as I did.

90% of Banh Mi stalls are just there to make the cheapest possible sandwich for people to stuff their face in on their break or on the way to work. There are a lot that actually make them to be delicious but if you were just going to random places that say "Banh Mi" you're probs gonna get something really cheap.

is spot on. If you can't ride a bike, you are going to have a very bad time in all cities in Vietnam. Renting a bike is very cheap (less than $10/24 hours) and allows you to explore the city/country at your own pace. I pity all the tourists who walk from place to place. At least call a taxi via Grab or Xanh SM (for EV cars), but then, the costs add up quickly.

just finished a trip there, and didn't like it much. I went to Turkey, Georgia, Vietnam, and Thailand. I spent a month or more in each place.

I think Vietnam is for budget travelers who like adventurous things like motorcycling or camping. Cities like HCMC suck in almost everyway in comparison to Bangkok. I think Hoi An will grow in popularity steadily and if I went back I'd probably just stay at a cheap place in Da Nang and go to Hoi An and Hue often. I'd even go again just for Dalat and Nha Trang but all the North to South or vice versa stuff is just annoying to me.

      yes, three strategies:
1: moving outside of saigon/hanoi/danang to teach in a small town/provincial capital
      2: dating a local girl
3: drinking in bia hoi/local spots and trying to talk with people every chance you get

it'll be extremely discouraging and seem impossible for the first 3-6 months and then things will click and you'll start to hear tones and decipher words and sentences. i still remember the first sentence i understood. i was walking to the park by pham ngu lao and saw a large pile of hats, outside a hat store by ben thanh market. i was standing next to a young couple and the girl said,
      >o troi oi, non nhieu qua!
      which translates roughly to
      >holy shit, that's a lot of hats

as far as learning vocabulary goes, i'd say the best strategy is allowing your brain to spread out organically, i mean make an effort to study a few new vocabulary words a week- i used to write flash cards and stick them to my mirror to see when i brushed my teeth in the morning, and try to use them throughout the day, noting pronunciation when i heard local people say them back to me. some will stick and some won't, that's okay, don't force it too hard. you'll find that your brain naturally falls into patterns or routines- challenge yourself to break out of those patterns and say things in different ways, pick up different grammatical structures if possible.
but honestly for the first couple months just being able to order coffee, ask for the bathroom, ask people their name and tell them yours etc is a huge win.
tones are a huge b***h but practice makes perfect , or not perfect but better bit by bit, day by day

again- getting outside the foreigner bubble and preferably living outside it is the single best way to learn. i went from absolute beginner to beginner living in bien hoa for a teaching job for a few months, and then about 2 years later i lived in quang ngai for 6 months and that bumped me to intermediate. you'll pick up an accent too which people seem to like.

Bro, I was tired of asking ppl the same question "Where should I go to? Which one is better?"

So I decided to go and see and decide it myself. So far, I've been to Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Luang Prabang (Laos), Ho Chi Minh and DaLat. I will give you my honest review:

      >Thailand
Best one hands down. It is exotic, it is cheap, it has good food, internet is fast, it is a bit chaotic but there's still good public transport to get around the cities.

      >Laos
As cheap as Thailand but with way less infrastructure. More nature. Food starts to get a bit weird but you can still find the good ol'combo sticky rice + bbq beef/pork/chicken anywhere. Getting around is a pain in the ass, roads are terrible. However, it is very laidback and I spent 20 days in Luang Prabang just chilling by the river and eating very good cheap food.

      >Vietnam
I hate it here so much. HCMC is a shithole, dirt and littered. Food is the same shit over and over, not that much variety, it is more expensive than Laos and Thailand. Few people speak english, restaurants dont have english menu and you will often wonder what the hell are you going to eat, cuz you're starving. People drive like crazy monkeys and they wont stop honking their shitty scooters/cars/bus. It is pure chaos.

It is like a bad combo of Thailand and Laos. It doesn't have the same nature as Laos and it is not as developed as Thailand. Just skip it altogether, you wont be missing much.

Frick you if you even dare to say Vietnam is cheaper than Thailand.

In Thailand I could get a proper meal of rice, soup and pork for 40 baht (1,1 euro).

In Vietnam, a cheap Banh Mi costs 40k dong (1,60 euro) and Pho starts at 60k dong (2,40 euros)

Just wanted to add that even Viet city girls appear very conservative compared to white girls [nearly all want to get married, have children, are family oriented] I talked to some and had funny conversations like with the one that told me:
"Trans women are not real woman"

        Answer this please fren

I've been on several dates with a Vietnamese woman who works for the government but won't tell me what she does. Because of the nature of her work she doesn't want to talk about it is what she said. Wtf does this mean bros?

Half the country works in the government. There are just lots of benign administrative jobs especially for women.

            Anonymous

Why would she be so secretive though? I couldn't get anything out of her at all and I had the impression maybe it was something political that she assumed I wouldn't like? She was very weird about it.

Not 100% but of she's a member of the people's committee or works for them shed just tell you since it's a huge badge of honour. I reckon she just has a really vague job, my friend "works for the government" and it took me 5 years to get out of him that he liaisons with trucking companies to get them to use the safest roads and compromising with them to get them to avoid using small streets

Don't listen to the other morons. It really depends on where you are, there are roads where everyone gives way to pedestrians and there are others where nobody will stop. Just ask the Viet qts or bros to help you across until you figure it out there are some basic rules
      >Walk with your hand up in the air if you're really worried
      >Maintain a slow pace and do not stop walking suddenly unless you're about to get hit by something
      >Maintain eye contact and eyeball the shit out of people that are driving in your direction
      >If you step backwards or jump back you're gonna have a bad time
      >Never try to run
Can't think of any others but yeah it really depends, the super congested slow traffic looks terrifying but it's actually really safe. Nobody wants to hit a whiteoid and have to pay some ridiculous medical bills.

        Anonymous

Use vehicles as cover, walking behind their bumper across the lane as traffic flows at a walking pace or slower. Watch people who work in traffic, see how they behave. Walking behind a moving car applies at intersections with stop signs as well. Walk behind the first car in line as it creeps forward waiting to enter traffic, not ahead of it. General SighSee advice, not Vietnam specific.

Viets really need to get their xenophobia in order. For every one white EFL teacher or digital nomad there are 10 Nigerian and Eritrean gangsters coming in. Before it was just the men but now they are bringing their whole families along too. There are whole new "luxury" apartment complexes full of Africans ruff rider motherfrickers who have their wives door knocking on the other apartment doors begging Viet housewives for money while the husbands just stand around outside doing nothing all day. At this rate it'll be 10 years before they have Japan tier control over organized crime in your country.

Meanwhile I've seen tons of white South Africans WADDLE AROUND HANOI with their stinky cheese feet.

Glad they got deported during COVID.

            Wtf you talking about?

Nah, African drug dealers never taken their families on business so these people are here to stay. They're coming here as apart of a refugee program, the major political players in the west are scrambling to sort their refugee situation out before elections so they've made a deal with the Viet government to house them in the thousands of apartments that lie on the outskirts of the city. It makes a lot of sense since just about every western leader has made their rounds through Vietnam very recently and they received a shitload of economic development money and probably had to take a bunch a stream of refugees as apart of the deal. This is the same thing they planned for Cambodia in the mid 2000s before all the deals fell through and the Chinese started to dominate their economy and foreign policy.

Vietnam influencers and vloggers are the absolute worst. There's absolutely zero creativity and they just go to the exact same spots and talk about the same stuff while eating the same 4 foods everyone has talked about 1000 times already. The only guy I find somewhat interesting just drives around random parts of the city talking about the area
        >"Now we're turning onto x street, if you take another left which I'm not gonna do there's a real good grilled seafood restaurant, they were pretty cool and had a bunch of cats there and one time one of the cats got stuck between the walls and they had to break the wall, I think the cat's name was Micky or something like that"

It's pretty basic but he shows some interesting parts of the city nobody ever goes too.

I'd recommend Đà Nẵng / Hội An since you said you didn't want to move around too much. 5 days is plenty to explore around.

Bros what work can I do in Vietnam other than teach English? I'm about to fail the CELTA because I can't into research and writing and shit, but I would rather kill myself here than go back home to the wage cage.

You sound like a native english speaker to me, so your best bet is to become a english teacher. There's no shame in this. Just teach kids if you have no experience. Although I think they will pay you really low if you have no certificate.

I'm a burger. I came here by plane like everybody else. I have a car back in the burgerland that I'm trying to sell (should be able to get about $20k I hope) and that will keep me going while I figure things out. I'm thinking about either trying CELTA again in a longer, less intensive version of the class where I have the time I need to bang my head against the wall on these assignments (this is how I finished my meme liberal arts degree - it was excruciating but I did it) or maybe just get a lower level TEFL. I think I can git gud at the classroom but I can't figure out the organization and planning. I think I have some learning disorders that were never diagnosed and addressed that frick me up on this kind of stuff because it isn't lack of time and effort.
