Yeah really it’s too small to handle the traffic of October. Don’t go.
last time I went was 15 years ago. I'm from Boston, less than a hour away from Salem. Salem Townies kept telling us and all other tourist to frick off. I went a year ago not during Halloween, saw a shop owner scaring a homeless man away.
Honestly, I think Pennsylvania is pretty good for Halloween. You can get the fall colors (though it's certainly not the best for that), a lot of quality haunted houses, local Halloween parades, and historical towns for ghost tours.

Is Salem a good place to live in general? I went there during the summer and it was really nice and predominantly white and the homes were affordable which was surprising.
It's really like anyother Mass town. I wouldn't consider it bad but with kitchy tourism. There are far better places imo like Gloucester that have way more fun this to do, fishing, cold water scuba diving and history. Gloucester before it became a fishing village was actually one of the first places settled by the colonists but was abandoned because of the harsh living conditions and later resettled much much later.
Not go, it's a fricking tourist trap. Though east lays with goth girls if that's your thing.
then what are good places to go to for Halloween?
Mexico City
it's on my bucket list but I was looking for a place I wouldn't have to go out of country for.

Fall colors peak in early October in most of Pennsylvania. Only Philadelphia area is liable to peak closer to Halloween.
New Orleans. Vegas
Reenact witch burnings with the boys.
