What are the most important words/phrases in Mandarin and Japanese that I'll need to know in Taiwan and Japan? I currently only know a few words in Japanese, and zero Mandarin.

      Less than you'd think but more than in a lot of Asian countries and definitely more than the mainland. Signs are almost always in English and traditional Chinese.
