They were very friendly and nice, I got invited into many homes, sometimes to eat sometimes to stay for a weekend.

I live there part-time, have been living there for years now and speak German fluently. Every SINGLE political discussion with a German will end up with them bringing the US into the conversation. They are obsessed with your country. A minority are American/capitalism fanboys but the majority will try to cope about their relatively poorer performance by trying to tell you how much worse the US is.
That plus the moral superiority they have, but they act morally superior over everyone. But they won't tell you this to your face. Germans are very passive aggressive.

But in general, the western part near Cologne has the most outgoing people. The south has the most wealthier middle class people. The northern Germans are more stoic and cold. The east has the most insular people.
I think the southern people might like you most if you are traditionally middle class, educated and well off.
If you are more working class and chill, the west will like you better.
The north will be polite but cold.
