November is good, you have pleasant cool weather with only a little rain, autumn colors, things are a bit cheaper than going in the spring. I recommend it

I went in Mid-October and it was absolutely perfect weather.

    Speaking from personal experience.
March/Early April: See the Sakura bloom, weather isn't too hot or cold
October/November: See the fall color transition, weather is not deathly hot anymore, and it's not freezing cold
Bad times: June/July/August: it's deathly hot and humid during the day , each day is suffering
IMO: the best time to go is October, so you can pair it up with Halloween festivities.

What about Dec / Jan / Feb? I'm going in November but I might do a week in either Jan or Feb for winter comfiness.

What “Halloween festivities” are there in Japan that are open to travelers? Is it like the west where Halloween is mostly for kids and gay men?

Only if he's Asian looking. Gaijin are completely invisible during these events. No one will interact with you.

I'll be there for halloween this year. On meetup.com there's loads of halloween bar meetups and meetups for people who arent into drinking to walk the streets of Shibuya to look at/take photos with people dressed up in crazy shit

Don't go, Japan is a shit country and don't believe the homosexuals that make it out to be so amazing. If you haven't travelled before then go, but honestly I wouldn't even call going there "travelling".

But that's exactly why everyone should go to see how bad it supposedly is. I'm going for 3 weeks next month and am completely open to having my expectations shattered.

I planned for a month, left after 2.5 weeks. Had a green car JR pass for 21 days, currently wasting the last 5 because I'm in SK. I fell for the meme so bad.

If you're expecting some epiphany or anime wonderland, you're gonna be disappointed. Just enjoy yourself, avoid the tourist traps, and don't let the shitty tuber vlog trends ruin the moment.

          >If you're expecting some epiphany or anime wonderland, you're gonna be disappointed
I mean, it's true that a lot of the stuff I like is Japanese (evangelion, kaiju, japanese cars, technology, pokemon etc) but I'm not even a huge weeb and I never romanticised the country where it comes from. That said, I still want to have some modicum of belonging since the general culture is far better than bongland, and it's just a nicer place (cleaner, more attractive people, no glorified underclass culture unlike the UK)

    march/april or october
in theory may and september are good but both have a lot of public holidays so public transport is packed and hotel/hostel prices are higher
other times of the year are way too hot/humid or too cold/windy.
if you're going there for a ski trip, go in Jan or Feb.

I’m planning on going during second half of February. Are activities and locations limited during that time of the year, or will I have access to the usual tourist shenanigans?
Tokyo/Hakone/Kyoto/Osaka/Nara. If snow is still around, might take a day trip to shirakawa-go.
