I ask a local where all the indians or pakis live, and then I go to that part of room and look around for a dormitory. Generally speaking they will be about 5-10 dollars a night.
You might get some weird looks, but if you're just passing through and know how to use sleeping earplugs and don't mind the smell, its no big deal.
Booking dot com has more options than hostelworld.
The only trick with booking is I've noticed you shouldn't bother filtering for hostels because a lot of hostels won't show up. Unfortunately you can't filter your options by showing shared rooms only, but what you can do is sort by lowest price and that will show you any hostels in the area.
But you should always check on hostelworld anyway in case you can get a better price.

If I'm 42 and in SEA should I consider hostels or would I be totally out of place? Seems like it would be a good place to meet people to go see shit and get drinks with. I've been staying in cheap hotels by myself and it's fine but saving even more money is cool.
SEA is peak 18-22 year old kids. Don't stay in hostels, if you do don't stay in dorms and get a private room. You'll be the creepy old guy, but you'll survive
>book in cheap Hostal >Hostal checks me in with someone who barely knows english >Hostal staff tells me there is only one of the facilities on site and men and women share >Hostal is not very clean >put my luggage down to enjoy my holiday >see mutt and australian in the room with me >ask for a refund and promptly leave
simple as after 25 you shouldn't be in hostals anyways
