where should I go for a week and a half?

I've got probably a week and a half of free time cuz of work and I don't know where I should go. I live around Chicago and I'm willing to drive I guess. but I've driven to the Rockies like three times and I'm tired of doing that drive. I'd prefer to fly and rent a car but on such short notice I know it's going to be expensive. I really like hiking and I have plenty of stuff for camping and whatever. Don't care much for hanging around cities unless I'm going with someone. haven't been to the east coast at all and I don't really care to. I'm much more interested in the West and Southwest, you know, stuff that looks as different from the Midwest as possible. but any recommendations that I wouldn't already know about would be appreciated. also i have no passport and have never been out of the country. I'd rather not sit at home for a week and a half.

    rough estimate
next week, of direct flights thus 10 to monday
    atlanta, orlando, miami are cheapest
tampa, las vegas, Minneapolis are all comparable to puertorico flight
aswell as fort meyers fl, and ft lauderdale
there are many more places that are expensive this short notice in august. boston not that much more.
next internationals would be dominican republic, canada, iceland
if you do connections, could also consider costa rica, jamica, colombia, mexico and bahamas

could land in atlanta and drive to savanah for example, get fat on southern cooking

Rental cars are not allowed to go off the beaten path.
Take Amtrak to Glacier National Park.

Technically it probably says you're not allowed to. I do it all the time. Just don't get stuck.

Vermont is nice this time of year. Small towns, hiking, swimming in the lakes etc.

Have you driven route 66 before? Maybe just down to Oklahoma. Lots of cool old motels, drive-in movie places, diners etc. Gives you something to do, then you can work out the rest as you go.

ive always KINDA wanted to check out that part of the east. the hills and towns seem nice. but its as far or further of a drive than the Rockies, and if im going to do a 16 hour drive i might as well head to the better mountains.
route 66 might be ok. i actually have the route bookmarked already. have you done it? i honestly cant imagine it being much.

Appalachians are very different mountains. The Green Mountains are extermely green with deciduous foliage that turns amazing colors in fall. Aspens are cool, but they have nothing on New England forests.

Go to Badlands National Park and the Black Hills of South Dakota. It's like Colorado without the overcrowding and the hippies. Hot Springs is a nice town and Wind Cave is cool. If you really want to get away from people, go into NW Nebraska for Chadron State Park and Toadstool Geologic Park. You might have all of Toadstool to yourself.

ive been to badlands and black hills once before. not for very long, but still. id like to go back for sure. it was really nice. but its 12 hours away, so i might as well just drive a little further and go to Colorado then where theres more to do.

Do a Canadian roadtrip. Hit Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal. You could go see Niagra Falls on thew way back and go do Cedar Point
