Where to live in europe?

So, I'm a merchant seaman from the UK. I work 4 months on 3 months off. During my 3 months leave i no longer want to go back to the UK (unless i absolutely have to). Primarily because cost of living in the UK is extortionate but also because trying to find short term rentals for 3 months is virtually impossible and if you do manage to find something you have to pay way over the odds. Also, if I stay out of UK for 6+ months it makes me eligible for a 100% income tax deduction. And the UK is a fricking miserable boring place.
Ideally i would live in south east asia, but it's too far away. I have to occasionally attend courses in the UK, furthermore once my earned voyage leave is finished I need to be available to board a ship with 24hours notice. Basically I need to be able to get back to the UK within 24 hours.

tl;dr i'm looking for somewhere with cheap cost of living where it's easy to rent an apartment for 3 months, with cheap regular and ideally direct flights to the UK. Beyond that I'm not really fussy. Nice weather would be a big bonus.
I'm guessing somewhere in eastern europe/balkans? But where exactly? i'm interested to see where people on SighSee would go in my situation.

      That's what I was thinking.
Does anyone have experience being in these places longer term? Renting an apartment? Would be interested to hear.
One of my main issues with the UK is the rigmarole of renting. Even for a shitty 1 bed shithole they want background checks, affordability checks, landlord references, employer references. It's a fricking ballache. Not to mention that in the nicer cities in the UK, places where you'd maybe actually want to live, there is severe housing shortages.

      How about Spain or Poortugal?

Just start, in the Mediterranean you will always find a place. I know people living months in Spain for free just to keep the house. I rented sometimes comfy 3 room flats for cheap just asking the Taxi driver. It's easy on the countryside, lot of empty areas because all the younger people want live in the city.

I'll look into it but I don't think it's much cheaper than the UK, especially during the summer season.

You can start with renting via Airbnb and the likes for a month or two and if you enjoy your stay, you can extend your contract with the landlord directly, cutting out the middleman.

I would suggest Batumi, Georgia - buy you may struggle as everyone would expect you to know some Russian. It also is not as good as it used to be. Consider Canaries for all year spring, Bulgaria for cheap booze, don't go to Poland, don't go to Moldova.

      >I would suggest Batumi, Georgia
georgia looks interesting but batumi looks absolutely soulless.

Those places offer a great blend of comfort and job opportunities, making it an ideal choice. What's even more enticing is that I can use both my Tap card and Revolut card there. Their services are something I absolutely don't want to pass up

Albania. 90 day visa free travel for UK citizens.
One of the coastal towns such as Durres or Sarande would be nice. You can rent an apartment with balcony near the beach for £300-500 p/m including bills. I would just rent through booking.com or Airbnb.
If you're going to Durres you can fly to Tirana, most major airports in the UK have flights to Tirana (because there is a shitload of Albanians in the UK now) and the flights are usually very cheap. If you're going to Sarandë you're better to fly to Corfu and then get the fast ferry from Corfu to Saranda. The ferry sails multiple times a day and isn't far from Corfu airport, and takes you direct to Sarandë. This is much better than trying to travel from Tirana to Sarande, Public transport in Albanian is terrible so trying to travel across the country by bus is not recommended.
That's one big negative of Albania. Terrible public transport. Maybe consider renting a car if you plan to travel about.

Have you considered Gdańsk (Danzig)? Might not be cheap but it's a seaport with a long history and direct flights to london

Odessa is cheap as frick at the moment- for obvious reason, such as risk of being killed by Russian ordinance. Very nice apartments for £200-300 p/m but, there is no flights (commercial no fly zone)
It would be an interesting place to spend a couple of months. Probably still safer than going to paris, statistically.

If you have the occasion, try Marseille or Italy. After 20 minutes spent there, your heart will know for sure if you want to spend more time here or never come back. There is no in between. Good luck in life.

    MonteBlack is worth considering.

Cheap flights, £700 a month should get you a decent airbnb.
