Maybe they lived in Crimea and were leaving for vacation in mainland Russia. Or perhaps they just wanted to go to a beach that isn't frozen. Even in war people still live their lives, and Crimea isn't the frontline.

They voted to join Russia, rebelled from Ukraine when their referendum was ignored, and Russia moved in to enforce it to be recognized. The vast majority of Crimeans consider themselves to be Russian and they haven't faced any meaningful resistance against their rule there.

Is that why those same soldiers watched people vote at the 'referendum' polling stations to 'fortify' the results? Is that why Russians were shipped in and there was no list of eligible voters? Is that why trains keep derailing and smookers keep smooking in Crimea? Is that why the Crimean tatars (15% of the population) boycotted the referendum but they got 99% turnout? >The Russian saboteur Igor Girkin, on the air of one of the Russian TV programs, admitted that the deputies of the Verkhovna Rada of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea to vote for the decision on the separation of Crimea from Ukraine were forcibly driven away by the so-called "militia", and he personally was one of the commanders of this "militia". Soon, the date of the referendum was changed twice: first moved to 30 March, and then to 16 March. The wording of the question was also changed – instead of expanding autonomy, it was about joining Russia. In fact, both "alternative" questions were formulated in such a way that they excluded Crimea's belonging to Ukraine.[18]
I forgot that the 'referendum' didn't have a status quo option. Voters literally had to choose exactly how they wanted to leave Ukraine.

there were 900 international observers there and they only saw cheating by Kiev and Poroshenko.

There were a few shills from pro Russian political parties but no independant observers, and regardless, the 'referendum' was staged under duress, clearly falsified, unconstitutional, and against Russia guarantees to recognize Ukrainian territorial integrity.

In the city of Donetsk, the regional capital where pro-Russia militias are concentrated, there were no open polling stations, local officials said earlier.

A CNN team driving through the city Sunday morning was not able to see a single polling station in operation. However, there were signs some voters were trying to go to polling stations in areas west and south of the city.

Besides the presidential race, candidates are also running in municipal elections in some cities. The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe deployed 900 observers for the election – the largest such mission in its history.

What does Donetsk have anything to do with Crimea? This news article is about the legitimate Ukrainian elections, not Russian sham referenda.

the "status" quo since 92 was Crimea being a Autonomous Republic within Ukraine that can pursue relations with Russia or whoever it wants to. That option was the status quo option in the 14 referendum

The existent constitution of Crimea was adopted in 1998. A 'return to the constitution of 1992' is not a status quo option.

Sure, but ethnic Russians are ruling over them and have been for centuries. Russia is centered around European Russia which first originated as the Kievan Rus and the Grand Duchy of Moscow the latter of which has been in the process of “retaking Russian lands” since 1200s until the present day. In the US that is not the case. You could argue that the original ethnicity was Anglo-Dutch settlers but they are gone. There is no American ethnicity. For example, I am an ethnic Greek living in America. I have no connect to this place historically

Yeah the Crimes he's charged of in the Hague have to do with taking Ethnic Russian children from the war zone to Russia, you know the ones Porshenko instituted the policy of making live in basements due to bombing and shelling?

Nothing to do with the war, and Invasion that was completely legitimate and with cause by their own admission here.

Can't hear you over the sound of you sucking Putin's wiener.

Ukraine is not a real country, it is the equivalent of Canada. If China somehow turned Canada against us, we would do the exact same thing to Canada as Putin is doing to Ukraine.

Why does Russia allow this to continue? If Germany attacked Canada you know the US would nuke Berlin, so why the frick does Russia do nothing while UKraine keeps bombing them?

Must be due to the Ukraine being a joke, at best being able to show videos of infantry getting droned, so they're going after civilians. Makes sense, considering they disregard theirs as cannon fodder as well. Overall stupidity on both sides: The Ukraine has already shown that they can fly drones into Moscow, so some form of defense or warning should exist around critical areas.

funny enough, this is the official story behind American involvement in WWI
a bunch of americans decided to tour Europe during the war, Germans sank the ships out of concerns they could be carrying ammunition, and Wilson (the original american globohomo) used that as a pretext
