The reason why it stings so much, especially for Brits like myself (and probably Bald too) is because Britain at one point was the centre of the fricking world. There’s a reason why Britain is at the centre of the map. It has such a rich, rich history that has shaped the world that we live in today more than any other nation.
The US has wealth in every state, from the cities to the suburbs. Yes, there are run-down projects and ghettos with a lot of poverty and violence, but there’s a hell of a lot of the opposite too. Britain isn’t like that. Most of our cities are actual Detroit tier. It’s actually staggering how uneducated and impoverished the average Brit is today.
I’ve been to more than 50 countries, lived in 5. Britain is by far the single most depressing one for me.

Another thing is that the people although generally are great they are the most npc sleepwalking into the slaughter house type people you will find anywhere. Any place which is even remotely nice is ruined by the people which live there. So many nice places are nice looking and pretty but when you actually stay more than an hour it just becomes sad.
This post right here. As a Brit from the Northwest (Liverpool, Manchester, Chester etc), I can say this area is a shithole through and through. The only two nice cities I ever went in the UK are London (because it's modern and has a lot of stuff) and Edinburgh. That's it. The rest of the cities are grey and drab. If you've seen one city like Manchester, then Leeds, Liverpool, Birmingham and all the rest are exactly the same.
Same old dying high street. Same shitty old branded food places like Nandos or Greggs. There is no small restaurants you can just walk into and have a meal cooked by the owner. It's all chippy takeaways and big chains.
The only decent places in the UK aren't available to get to via train. Places like Snowdonia. The Cliffs of Dover. The dozens of Scottish Lochs. The Peak/Lake District. Real pretty places.
The cities are shitholes. The only thing I can agree on is the crime levels aren't reaching as bad as somewhere in the US like Chicago where there is a daily shooting.
Either way, I can't wait to go back to Japan next month. To a place with actual decent cities.

The cities are far cleaner. Less traffic (England is so fricking bad for traffic it's unbelievable). There are public toilets available everywhere, unlike in the UK where they shut them all down cause druggies go in them and shoot up.
The roads in the UK are falling apart. They resemble the moon at this point the amount of craters. Councils are going bankrupt and closing down community events and other buildings.
Every street has about 10 restaurants, all owned by the person living there who has stories to tell about their lives while you watch them make your food. Nothing like that in the UK. It's just chippies and shitty Nandos or Wagamamas. Rent and tax has absolutely destroyed the UK in that respect for small businesses.
You don't get heckled by kids and teenagers in Japan because there is a sense of respecting your elders. In the UK you're lucky not to get attacked if you walk past a gang of chavs.
I could go on forever. It's not just the buildings, it's the overall attitude of the country. I grew up around poverty in the Northwest. Not some silver-spooned Southern London wanker.
Didn't even mention how bad public transport is. They're either striking or being 20 minutes late. Or you sit on the bus and get heckled by some kids, or listening to some dickhead play his shitty rap music out loud on his phone. Then he threatens to stab you if you ask him to turn it down.
Japan was the first time I experienced proper public transport. It's 99% always on time. It's always clean. People are quiet and respectful and don't bother others with their music or chatter.
I'm sympathetic to what you're saying, anon, especially if you come from an environment of exposure to British poverty and especially the British underclass, who are pretty unique in the developed world from what I understand, but I think you have not mentioned some of the darker side of Japan that as a foreigner you have had no reason to see. A very good friend of mine lives in a provincial city in Japan teaching English, he's very positive about Japan but they have a lot of cultural and even infrastructural problems that are not obvious outside the major few cities, just like we in England find our resources concentrated in making London work well.
One thing I will say, not necessarily in response to you but the thread in general, is that a lot of Britain's provincial cities are getting better and safer. Birmingham, Manchester and Liverpool are incomparably safer and get more investment than they did when I was a kid in the early nineties, when you could really feel the effects of de-industrialisation. Where the decline has been really felt IMHO has been in certain towns that offer nothing economically - seaside towns, mill towns, and especially mining towns. These places have become zombie wastelands, but I really don't feel it's fair to tar the big cities with the same brush.
I hope you are able to move to Japan if you want to, anon. It does seem like it would help get you out of a rut. The UK is terrible for class mobility, especially if you are located in the wrong region.

If by school you mean high school then just an ordinary state school in the UK. First school was in an international school in Saudi Arabia. I didn't go to uni and it was one of the best decisions of my life.
I'm not into the flashy consumerism either and I stay well the frick away from the tourist traps, but I just want to be left alone and live my own life, in a nice apartment by the marina where I won't be gouged out the ass by rent and commuting costs, or worry about having the British police knock on my door because someone misconstrued a comment I made on social media. I also don't want to be stuck here being unable to travel because of another pandemic or worse still, a war where I'm forced into the draft to fight for some dumb war thousands of miles away.
