Would you ever try the Vagrant Holiday method? I discovered his content recently and it is quite impressive how he is able to rack up a 40 day stay in Japan and still have the biggest cost be the flight ticket with no hotel expense.

At my present phase of life, nah. I’m old and bourgeois and have money. I like beds and showers and private toilets.

But I did quite a lot of spontaneous unplanned overnights and weekends with similar techniques when I was young. My favorite was crashing in a dormitory at a women’s college for a few nights; my friend (also male) and I had to climb in and out the first/second-floor window to avoid guards who wouldn’t have let us past the lobby. It was nice of the girl whose floor we were using to host us. She was probably taking a risk that could have been a headache.

I also slept in a school playing field for a night before a job interview once—I must have been the only homeless person in town with a tie. I didn’t end up getting the job, but I don’t think that was why.

Anyway, it’s not my bag, and I have almost no patience for stinky people cluttering up my daily life and being rude about the shit they claim to be entitled to. But I still think traveling on the ultra-cheap is worth trying short-term for those so inclined.

Why would having money be incompatible with being a nobody? Some of the richest people I know are nobodies, or at least nobody interesting. Someone has to sell software as a service to big pharma. Or push papers for big banks. Or barf up six-figure slide decks for idiot VPs looking to cut costs. Among plenty of other reasonably well-paid but in practice totally lame jobs.

Anybody who makes it to about 35 in basically any big corporate job is rich enough to insist on en suite bathrooms if they feel like it.

Yeah, fair guess. I’m not, at least not in the literal ‘I am homosex’ sense, but I’m a pompous, longwinded loudmouth, so it’s an easy mistake to make. If I were really gay I would probably dress better.

Based tone interpreter. I got strong “I work in some 60k cubicle job so this means I have money” vibes

I feel you, but I enjoy either extreme. The only thing I truly hate about money is paying for something that's shit in the end -- most mid-cost stuff does that. If I can only afford some middle of the road hotel or hostel, I'd 80% of the time rather sleep in a park and save the money to do something cool. Lots of the time traveling I would "reward" myself after a night roughing it with a fancy as frick meal or something else high class to balance it out with the money I saved. It's a weirdly addicting mentality. Yeah I couuuld pay $150 tonight for this hotel, or I could sleep under this nice tree and then buy a $100 meal tomorrow, with $50 left over to dick around with like I don't give a frick. Ah, life being poor.

Sorry to besmirch you, but this sounds like you’re just poor. I wouldn’t want to spend $150 on a hotel either but I would at least settle for a hostel or something man.
        >saving $150 on a hotel to blow it on a single, $100 dollar meal
Yea this sounds like some stray dog learned to speak English and is voicing his appetites about life. I find it contemptible.

The woman who raised me was kind of odd and very poor. We would go on vacations to Europe every year while I was a kid and do this kind of thing. So I grew up with the understanding that stealth camping while traveling was completely normal. In fact it wasn't until I went backpacking with my college friends that I realized most people don't subject themselves to this kind of experience.
I still travel this way in my 30s; I've probably stealth camped and hitchhiked in 30 countries. What makes me different from Vagrant is I avoid cities completely. Only cities I've genuinely slept rough in were Paris and Singapore, and it wasn't by choice.

Cold countries I use a tent and sleeping bag, tropical countries I use a Hennessy hammock and wool blanket. I really have very normal vacations, eating normal food, I just don't sleep in beds.

Cool . Ive only bike toured when i was camping so the bike mostly carried the bullshit. How big a bag do you carry and do you locker it in cities or just lug it while sightseeing. Or maybe you hitchhike and just stroll thru small towns and villages mostly?

That is cool as frick. I grew up poor so my family never took us on holiday and when I was old enough the only way I could afford to travel was stealth camping.

How would you do when you were a kid? In a tent? How far from urban environments would you go?

Vagrant Holiday is based because he embodies the rejection of the sanitized, prepackaged and neutered travel experience they sell you today.
Travel today is antitravel, it's the most soulless and fake shit ever. There's no point to travel if you're going to be railroaded into visiting Disneyified tourist traps and be harassed by peddlers trying to sell you junk.
Vagrant is the opposite of afraid, it takes some serious balls to sleep out in the open in a foreign country.

one of the downsides that i don't think he really shows is how much time you spend finding somewhere appropriate (secure/secluded) to sleep

Just finished watching all of his videos after I came across this thread. It's pretty impressive, you could just work for 1-2 months before buying the gear you need (backpack, sleeping bag, etc) and start travel for double the time you've worked.
He seems pretty obsessive with bushes and sleeping in woods though. It's like he cares more about the survival aspect of traveling than traveling itself. I get the no hotels policy, but you can still spend a little money here and there to actually feel the place up.
Just how realistic is all of this? I mean what are the odds you are going to get beaten up, raped, and have all of your valuables stolen by streetshiters? I suppose it really depends on where you're going. Thought about doing something light like Europe before going to a more dangerous place in East Asia or whatever.
Are there any other youtubers with similar content? I'm not looking for any of that russian-parkour-explore-abandoned-nuclear-labs shit though.

I think the reason he's so focused on bushes and the woods is because he wants to stash his stuff during the day so that he can wander around town unencumbered during the day and not look stick out as much, he also mentioned what happened when he was new to stealth camping, he woke up to being sprayed with a hose in Mexico, I think it's generally a good idea to never have people see you sleeping or setting up camp, his stuff was stolen while in Portugal too

Apparently he kept in contact with one of the girls he met during his travels, I don't remember whether it was the one who broke the door in the abandoned house or the crazy one with the glasses. Anyway she's got her own youtube channel and a few months ago finally answered one of his admirers who asked what happened to him. She posted a long comment detailing how he was caught helpless in his sleeping bag in some bush by this group of indian a who then proceeded to rob and violently rape him before they left him to rot with multiple stabs.
I'm assuming the original video of the incident wasn't taken by him but by the indians who then shared it on facebook or something, and that's how it got leaked. You can't really identify him since his face are seen only for a few seconds, all bruised up and with a pair of broken glasses. Idk whether the indians broke them or are they the same pair the arab drug dealer broke after he punched him in Portugal, he was a cheap bastard.

I got inspired watching his videos and tried it. Made it like 3 days it was fricking AWFUL. I slept at a bus station getting woken up by security and fighting methheads. I slept in a park terrified of the other homeless and I slept next to a drainage ditch thing. It was awful. I don't know how he does it with no proper sleeping pad, no tent, no shower, no cookware. I've lived in my car for a month and that's about as homeless as I can handle before I just lose my fricking mind and NEED a proper shower, my own place, privacy, safety.

Also he is like autist level of "no fear". Unuroncially I think there's something wrong with him. And just look what happened to him - robbed multiple times, assaulted, mugged by guys with a machete, dealt with floods, drug dealers, all manner of crazy shit. It just doesn't seem fun at all. Also he doesn't really show the reality of it - waking up passing and shitting in bushes, spend hours waking to find a spot, reeking like shit, looking like shit, using baby wipes in public bathrooms to "shower", clothes dirty and reeking. Never safe, never comfortable. For what? To save a few bucks? I'd rather have the comfort and not the money.
